Voter Registration Remodeling

Overview

Secure Families Initiative is a non-partisan group of military families. Their mission is to encourage military partners, family members, to vote and advocate for their rights in foreign policy and national security.

This project is part of my externship with SFI, where I collaborated with other designers in the supervision of mentors & SFI team.

The Problem

"Users are having hard time finding information about registering to vote which results in less voting."

The majority of SFI users are military family members or out stationed military members who lack the time and information to find out where their polling stations are or check their voter registration status, resulting in less voting and affecting on a bigger level.

We also conducted Heuristic evaluation to find out the useability of the interface. Following are the main pain points that need to be addressed. On the website, information is scattered all over the place, making navigation difficult and overwhelming. The website doesn't have clear calls to action.

Research:

We started the research process and analyzed the previous data that SFI collected. Based on it, we found out that only 36% of active duty spouses vote in every election. That's a staggering number, and we can see a correlation between difficulty in finding information and not voting. We carried out clicked tests using optimal workshop to understand the user pain points better.

Failure Rate for Tasks:
67% - Active duty spouse.
83% - Where you currently reside.
83% - Where to vote if overseas.

Great app but for me, the biggest flaw is the lack of flexible filters for the search feature. If I search for pizza, I get everything that contains pizza in the name including pizza sauces, dough, cheeses, and so on. ” - -Beth

“Please add the option to search specific ingredients in products. In the filter, if I want to search for products that contain or exclude products in the search results that contain soy, that would be helpful.”- Jason

Our customer discovery highlights the desire for an alert and a search feature for specific ingredients. The first consumer asks specifically for a feature to alert them that a product contains an ingredient. One asked for a filter for products that contain nuts, another for soy. It is clear that the top problem for users is a lack of a filter. They want an easier way to determine what ingredients are in the foods they are eating and how to avoid them .

Prototype

One of the pain points in the current EWG APP was users getting confused about how the app works and how the rating system works. To address this issue, an onboarding guide was created and the information was rearranged to assist users in navigating the app and the rating system.

Results

Using our redesigned voter registration website, users will be able to access all of the resources available. By simplifying the process, users will be guided through it without feeling overwhelmed.
A simplified way of accessing information is predicted to increase voter turnout.
